Employee Engagement

Getting caught up in the day-to-day running of a business can often lead to opportunities for growth and improved performance being overlooked.

Value is often not placed on stopping, assessing, reviewing and considering better options and then taking action towards a more streamlined or better way of doing things.
Why is this? Is it because you think it will all fall apart? It seems that business owners rarely want to have the hard conversation or make changes to tasks, jobs, people, processes and methods as, just like a puzzle, once all the pieces are in place it would take too much effort to shake it up, sort all of the pieces, realign them, and then fit them all back together.

Imagine having a head office with a team of 20 staff that support 100 outlets.

Ideally the team are all long-term employees and very experienced in their roles and efficient in how they function within the business. They possess a full understanding of the culture, have relationships with franchisees and their fellow employees and are engaged in the vision and the purpose of the brand.

As much as we all want to be the ideal, in reality it is likely that at some point employee disengagement could be the number one challenge that you are faced with. It could be a lack of internal leadership, unproductive team meetings where no one is willing or able to step up and table the real challenges being faced in the workplace or a lack of confidence to put forward ideas that could see improvement in head office structure.

Perhaps it’s that there is limited time for senior leaders to nurture internal head office staff, protect the culture and mentor team members, as they are too busy with other areas of the business. Are you checking in to see that there are no office politics, internal factions or employees protecting one another if goals and deadlines are not met.
Now that we have looked at the challenges that can arise, let’s look at how these challenges can be tackled to ensure a positive outcome for all. You should be reviewing your strategic goals and developing processes, developing and setting the strategies and tasks to ensure they are met.

Do you conduct regular team meetings, project group meetings, performance appraisals and business plan reviews to track the KRAs, KPIs and strategic goals are being met, or are at least on track to meet the deadlines?
When was the last time you audited the culture, organisational structure and employee engagement to make sure that your perception of the status quo is the reality?
